In my experience, the most durable compliance programs are built on security controls that reflect how your organization actually operates, as opposed to how a template assumes it does. For complex environments, that means custom control design, testing that maps to real engineering workflows, and security documentation that a new team member could pick up and run with, because the logic is documented rather than held in someone's head.
Put human expertise in the right places
A mature security program puts the right humans in the right positions. Compliance experts and GRC practitioners who understand your stack, your audit history, and your auditor's expectations can contextualize findings, own escalation paths, manage auditor relationships directly, and make the judgment calls that automation software can't.
That expertise should live in the program's structure. Avoid having it live within the mind of a single employee whose departure would leave a gap.
